Purpose of Job
Within the TMT team, the Associate Director, Head of the Venture Capital Investment Programme (the “Head”, “VCIP”) has responsibility for the VCIP Team’s investment activities conducted across the Bank’s CoOs. The incumbent is responsible for the delivery of the VCIP Team’s business plan; engagement with the business community to develop business; supervision of the origination, structuring and implementation of EBRD direct venture capital and venture debt investments involving multiple counterparties. The Associate Directors within VCIP (including the Head) will report to the Director TMT and VCIP as their line manager. It is important that the Head understands and judges local sensitivities in each country in coordination with relevant Country Heads and coordinates closely with the relevant Sector, Equity or Policy teams. The role also supports EBRD policy reform efforts to promote EBRD’s mandate; develops and maintains high level relationships externally with management teams, co-investors, , and other stakeholders in the venture capital ecosystem. Close collaboration internally with a range of functions within the EBRD is also a key premise of this role.
Background
Venture Capital Investment Programme (“VCIP”; http://www.ebrdvcip.com) is the key product of EBRD in helping to develop the venture capital market in the EBRD countries of operation. The VCIP investment strategy is to identify and support with financing, together with co-investors, high quality entrepreneurs and management teams with innovative technologies and business models, compelling intellectual property and deep market knowledge in the Bank’s countries of operation, as they move from product development to commercialization, or from an early revenue stage to a much larger market opportunity. Given the high-risk and high return profile of the intended investments, VCIP is being managed as a set of separate frameworks, which define the investment criteria, with an independent Advisory Committee, consisting currently of three external members and one internal member.
VCIP is an independent team within TMT dedicated to origination, structuring, execution, implementation and monitoring venture capital and venture debt investments. Its day-to-day operations are guided by a venture capital and venture debt strategy. The team is centralized at HQ. Close collaboration with senior colleagues in Resident Offices as well as with Sector, Equity and Policy teams within the Bank’s matrix structure will be critical to business delivery.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
Originate, proactively engage and supervise/lead execution of every aspect of venture capital and venture debt investments.
Be accountable and responsible for achieving VCIP scorecard objectives.
Support the Director, TMT and VCIP and work towards meeting the qualitative and quantitative objectives of the team as a whole.
Actively develop and manage relationships with management teams, co-investors, and other stakeholders in the venture capital ecosystem. Represent the Bank at relevant conferences.
Act as VCIP responsible senior counterpart for the above transactions in internal discussions, in various Committees and at the Board.
Ensure that transaction due diligence, structure and related documents are of the highest quality: review project documentation for submission to and approval by the Bank’s Committees and Board, ensuring clear drafting, accurate descriptions and analysis, in line with EBRD’s operational principles and lessons learned.
Supervise appropriate quality and thoroughness of inter-departmental consultation on such projects prior to Committees and Board review and of their presentation.
Work on the existing portfolio of investments, to protect and grow revenue-earning assets. Supervise and manage external and internal relationships, oversee implementation across the investment lifecycle, and resolve all related issues.
Liaise with the Business Development, Region, Sector and Equity Managing Directors, Country Heads on VCIP project development and implementation, ensuring good cooperation, information sharing and an optimal use of Bank’s resources; contribute to the preparation of country strategies.
Provide or arrange for on the job support/coaching/supervision of VCIP investment professionals during project screening, due diligence, modelling and monitoring. As and when required actively participate in the project processing work.
Assist the Director, TMT and VCIP in strategic leadership of the team as well as in managerial matters such as recruitment, budget and business planning.
Qualifications & Skills / Experience & Knowledge
Extensive years of relevant and verifiable direct venture investment experience with a proven track record.
Experience across the entire investment life cycle: of originating, leading and completing complex transactions, managing performance of investee companies and driving towards exit.
Active engagement with investee companies, track record of board seat appointments.
Ability to manage a number of varied tasks, resilient attitude towards conflicting priorities and challenges.
Proven capacity to drive business in a tough and challenging environment.
Soft communication and negotiation skills suited for a wide variety of people both inside and outside the Bank.
Ability to build effective working relationships with management teams, co-investors and colleagues in a multicultural environment and in a matrix organisational structure.
It is important to understand the EBRD’s overall development mandate, its internal processes and role in policy dialogue.
Experience of and judgement on integrity matters.
Ability to manage a team of VCIP investment professionals.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Excellent presentation and marketing skills.
