Purpose of Job
Financial Institutions ( FI) is one of EBRD’s three sector teams, responsible for the delivery of close to 150 transactions and an annual bank investment over € 3.5 billion. FI’s client base is comprised of approximately 350 counterparties primarily comprising of banks, leasing companies and microfinance institutions but also specialised financial sector participants such as stock exchanges and deposit insurance agencies.
As of January 2021 FI is structured into six teams as follows:
Four geographic-focused groups, respectively dedicated to deposit-taking banks and deposit guarantee institutions in the following regions:
EU countries of operations (the EU banks team also is responsible for developing and rolling out structured finance products across all geographies)
Western Balkans and Eastern Europe
Russia, Central Asia, Caucasus and Turkey
South and East Mediterranean region
Specialised Financial Services, focusing on specialised financing firms
Operations and Portfolio
The position of Associate Director, Senior Banker, Portfolio Manager, is a key role in the Operations and Portfolio team of EBRD’s Financial Institutions (FI) team. The primary task of the role is to protect the quality of EBRD’s assets invested in financial sector through the following core activities:
Management of a share of FI portfolio comprising primarily of senior debt exposures, focusing on portfolio quality, timely interventions and exposure management.
Close cooperation with EBRD’s internal risk and portfolio management functions.
Identification of and closing the knowledge gaps through, among other, providing training and on-the-job coaching for FI staff on credit and risk management issues.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
Portfolio management
Proactively working with the FI team directors (TDs), business leaders (BLs) and operation leaders (OLs) to monitor the risk profile of the FI’s counterparties. Provide advice and identify issues that should be raised with FI management and/or Risk Management.
Report to the FI management on the quality of the team’s portfolio and in timely manner alert the FI management of clients potentially requiring increased attention or action.
Develop and maintain an internal workflow system to ensure delivery of annual monitoring reporting in efficient and timely manner.
Liaise with the Bank’s internal risk management functions.
Review and approve amendments, waivers and consents for existing projects as required, working with OLs and Operation Administration Department.
Review and/or approve proposed annual new business envelopes and new exposures proposed as a part of the FI Credit Risk Envelope process and/or other applicable internal delegated approval processes.
In the event of a counterparty creditworthiness deterioration, provide guidance on restructuring EBRD’s exposure and work with the OL/BL and Risk Management colleagues to maximise recovery effort.
Monitor the market/industry developments in areas of particular interest, among other, microfinance, and communicate regularly key trends observed to TDs, BLs and OLs.
Institutional learning and training as a part of portfolio management
Identify knowledge gaps among BLs and OLs and provide training and on-the-job coaching for FI staff on credit and risk management issues or knowledge-sharing events on the same as well as new regulatory or market developments.
Operations
Jointly with the colleague portfolio managers manage the annual evaluation programme as a part of institutional learning and guide the FI OLs through the process.
Jointly with Director, FI Operations and Portfolio and the colleague portfolio managers, to cooperate with Internal Audit Department on project-specific matters and various business methodologies applied to FI operations.
Work on the design and implementation of new internal MIS such as Monarch and similar system required to support the business and portfolio management.
Serve as a focal point for operational risk management in the FI and cooperation with Operational Risk Team on implementation and monitoring of operational risk area matters in the FI.
This job description is not limited to the accountabilities and responsibilities listed above and the incumbent may be requested to perform other relevant duties as required by business needs.
Qualifications, Skills, Experience & Knowledge
Experience & Knowledge:
Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience from an investment/merchant/commercial bank and/or other relevant private sector financial institutions or an impact investment industry.
Extensive practical credit and financial analysis experience with a thorough understanding of risk policy and best practice in risk management in general and financial institutions sector in particular.
Qualifications and Skills:
Credit analysis skills, with the ability to interpret accounts, understanding international accounting principles and practice of credit analysis.
Ability to handle a large number of tasks independently and deal decisively with issues as they arise
Commercial acumen and sound business judgement, preferable with demonstrable experience in financial institutions
Analytical and critical thinking to provide constructive input, extract lessons learned and incorporate it into the on-the-job coaching of BLs and OLs as well as into a knowledge sharing communication/events to enhance knowledge of BLs and OLs.
Ability and confidence to communicate with personnel at all levels.
Relationship management and negotiation skills.
Ability to work to deadlines and under time pressure.
Computer literacy, conversant with Microsoft Office and spreadsheet packages including financial analysis.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
