JOB TITLE Graduate Assistant
REPORTS TO Deputy Head (Co-curriculum)
September 2016 to July 2017
Hours of work and days worked will vary depending on the needs of the School and are to be negotiated with the successful candidate.
Holidays as per School holidays unless otherwise agreed.
Accommodation, within a boarding house, for a single person is provided and all meals during term time. The accommodation, which has cooking facilities, is available throughout the year.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
• We are offering a placement for a graduate or equivalent, who may want to gain experience of working in a school environment prior to training as a teacher.
• Graduate Assistant to work in different functions across the whole school; leading individual sessions and small groups. Part of your role will include working alongside the class teachers to design, develop, and deliver exceptional lessons. You will have the responsibility of assisting in the wide range of sport clubs after school and in the evening, and be available to give pastoral support to the pupils
• The role comes with accommodation, board and a salary (£826 per month) in return for variable hours and days worked to support sporting events and other functions within the School calendar. More hours are likely to be required prior to an event but less at other times.
• Paid additional residential duties may also be available for the right candidate.
KEY ELEMENTS OF THE ROLE
• Be an excellent enthusiastic role model who wants to pass on their skills to young people.
• Have experience of football at a very high level e.g. county level or university first squad
• Demonstrate the ability to teach or coach a second major sport (ideally netball, hockey, dance, aerobics, swimming or tennis), carried out at KESW to a very high standard.
• Be prepared to offer extra coaching hours where necessary.
• Have the ability to assist in the teaching of GCSE pupils and preferably IB & A Level pupils too.
• Be equally comfortable teaching male, female or mixed classes.
• Must must be prepared to accompany teams to School fixtures including those that fall on Saturdays, and have the ability to umpire/referee at least one major KESW sport
• Be able to work effectively with the extended team of staff in each department, assisting as required and giving and taking advice as necessary.
• Assist with Department administration (management and organisation of fixtures or events).
• Be able to use ICT in an effective and organised manner.
• To live and work within a residential boarding house including evening and weekend pastoral duties which may include including assisting in the running of evening activities for boarders, supervising prep, free time and lights out.
• Be prepared to work as a cover assistant as directed by the Deputy Head (Co-curriculum).
• Join in the life of a busy of a busy boarding School in areas as directed by the Headmaster.
• Accompanying school trips and expeditions on occasion.
• To take part in further training courses where the opportunity permits.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED
• Prior involvement in working with young people
• Degree in a relevant subject.
• Experience of volunteering within university, school, college or a club.
• Ability to prioritise effectively and work as a team.
• Be a strong role model for young people.
• Demonstrate creative and innovative thinking for developing volunteering deas within a school setting.
• Have excellent communication skills; both written and spoken.
• Good IT skills including Word, Excel and Power point.
• Must be flexible, organised and possess a ‘can do’ attitude.
• Attention to detail, meeting deadlines and the ability to work under pressure are essential.
• Interest of working in the education sector essential.
• Sympathy with the ethos and aims of the department, School and of the Foundation.
The School: King Edward’s School is a co-educational boarding and day school for some 400 pupils, around 65% of whom are full boarders. It caters for broadly equal numbers of boys and girls, with main intake points at 11+, 13+ and 16+. There is a Sixth Form of 150 or so, most of who go on to Universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. At the same time the curriculum is deliberately made wide and suitable for pupils of differing abilities. From September 2010 the school completed a transition to the IB Diploma as the sole Sixth Form curriculum. The Area: The school occupies 100 woodland acres on the edge of Witley, a village on the borders of Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. It is about twelve miles from Guildford and four miles from Godalming. Witley station is on the Portsmouth to Waterloo railway line and the journey from London takes just under an hour by train. The School is 45 minutes by taxi from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The area is a noted beauty spot and the School is surrounded by woodland, heath land and commons. Local amenities include the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford and the School is within close proximity of London and the south coast. There are good shopping facilities in Haslemere, Godalming and Guildford.
