Head of Academy Medical – Millwall FC – London

Role Summary:
To manage and ensure the function of the Medical Department throughout the Academy. Supervise and support the medical staff, sports science and analysis performance staff of the academy. Provide first class physiotherapy and injury prevention services to all Millwall Academy Players when necessary and delegate responsibilities to the appropriate staff.
Ensure the creation of the medical department that is viewed as leading-edge in injury prevention and management

Key Responsibilities:
The role includes, but is not limited to:
• Manage the day to day operations of the Academy Sports Science and Medicine department across all phases.
• Take over authorship of the departmental performance plan and ensure correlation of plan to daily activity.
• Develop and provide effective communication strategies to all staff, players and parents re the departmental philosophy and operations.
• Lead and manage all departmental staff through processes of appraisal and individualised CPD development strategies. Ensuring all qualifications are up to date and meet audit requirements.
• Continue to progress and improve the academy athletic development strategy across all phases.
• Ensure appropriate medical staffing across all venues including training, match day and tours etc.
• Manage and deliver a strategy for the maintenance of medical notes/records for all academy players in line with CSP and HCPC guidance.
• Responsible for supervising the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of all players across the academy. Delegates responsibilities to the appropriate medical staff.
• Create a departmental philosophy for a comprehensive movement screening assessment for all academy players (U9-U18 including trialists). Supervise the appropriate staff for the implementation of the philosophy.
• Responsible for the smooth running of the injury prevention program on a day to day basis utilising the departments therapists and sports science staff when needed based on the departmental philosophy. Includes daily pre-activation and prehab program organisation and implementation.
• Supervise, assist and educate the PT Physiotherapists/Interns to design and implement a movement and physio screening programme.
• Assist and educate the PT Physiotherapists/interns to be responsible for the smooth running of the injury prevention programme based on the departmental philosophy. Includes pre-activation, prehab/rehab protocols.
• Assist and lead sports science/medical staff in the delivery of early, mid and end stage rehabilitation/conditioning sessions as required based upon the departmental philosophy.
• Implement strength, movement re-training and stretching sessions with squads or groups of players as required by the department.
• Supervise the collection and evaluation of ‘Readiness to Train’ measures, including RSI, well-being questionnaires and daily physio screen.
• lead PDP (U18) match day cover and assist with EDS, YDP and FD match cover as required by the department.
• Ensure the management of injuries effectively meets its commitments to the players, coaches and senior management through accurate documentation on the club’s PMA. Ensure all medical notes are up to date within 24 hours of treatment and logged on the PMA.
• Deliver indoors (Physio room and Gym) and outdoors (On field) rehabilitation sessions according to departmental rehabilitation syllabus and safely return to play.
• Liaise with Sports Science department in terms of objective numbers (GPS metrics) over the return to play process of the PDP and YDP players (U15 – U18).
• Organise and lead the pre-signing medical of U9-U18’s players and liaise with appropriate departments for decisions.
• Accompany players to medical consultations at short notice either in this country or abroad when required. Ensuring best practice is always followed and the player is receiving the optimal advice at all times.
• Liaise with medical staff for injury audit for all players across academy on a weekly, monthly and annual basis providing feedback to provide accountability for the department and actively seek to follow best practice.
• Liaise with club doctor to produce and maintain of emergency action plans and department procedure documents.
• Lead the development and set up of the PMA to improve the practice of the medical department.
• Lead the education of all PDP players in terms of injury prevention, injury care, post-match recovery and drug awareness following the instructions of the apprenticeship’s instructions.
• Organise the departmental in-service training programs and assist with scenario training on YDP/FP match days where necessary.
• Organise and manage the developmental and education of departmental students/volunteers whilst on placement and ensure the relationship between Millwall FC and local universities is always maintained in healthy balance.
• Promote safeguarding within the organisation and create a safe and inclusive environment for all. Report any safeguarding concerns as and when required

Hours of work:
Full time as the role requires. Due to the nature of the post evening and weekend work will be necessary
