Main Purpose of Job
Sourcing and writing news and feature material to daily and monthly deadlines for www.transport-network.co.uk and Surveyor magazine and associated products.
Key Responsibilities
Gathering and generating news and feature ideas
Assisting Content Editor in producing e-bulletins
Promoting content through social media and developing visual content features for the web
Feature writing
Ensuring editorial quality of the magazine and web is of a high standard
Representing the magazine and other Hemming Group products to the highways and transport sector and local government market especially in relation to Surveyor and Transport Network conferences, exhibitions and other associated events such as roundtables and seminars
Developing ideas that can be turned into commercial opportunities
Activities
Writing news – from lead stories to briefs
Establishing and maintaining contacts both in the public and private sector in the highways, traffic and transport sector
Making new contacts in new areas that could help develop the future of the brands
Monitoring news sources for stories – from newspapers, magazines, internet, press releases and contacts
Working with other members of staff to develop the strategy of the magazine
Liaising with/assisting Content Editor in establishing daily contributions to the website and both news and feature ideas for the magazine
Attending events to report and to represent the magazine within the market
Maintain and improve the quality and accuracy of editorial
Operating the web content management system and uploading content from the magazine onto the web
To take charge of the division’s social media output and develop new ideas that could lead to both editorial and commercial developments
Success criteria
The news content of the magazine and website are of the highest quality
The profile and reputation of the magazine and website grows in the market
The website and magazine develop with new ideas and opportunities to educate readers in different ways
Increased number of exclusive news stories and new contacts
The magazine is produced monthly within deadlines, and the website is updated regularly by the reporter as well as assisting with the production of e-bulletins
Maintain good working relations with colleagues
Personal Specification – Ideally the candidate should have:
A recognised journalistic qualification
Two years experience as a journalist ideally in the business to business sector
The ability to be able to make contact with/establish a relationship with readers, key industry personnel as well as industry personnel in the commercial sector
Experience in social media output and operating web content management systems
HTML experience if possible
Experience of producing a different variety of web stories using visual data
