The RIBA Journal is looking for an assistant editor to take on special projects and contribute in print and online.
This newly created position sits across the RIBA Journal’s commercial and editorial content. We need someone who can write, commission and create high quality editorial and commercial content. They will be accountable for guest content programmes for high calibre clients and partners, and will generate regular editorial standalone stories and features of maximum online impact. It will boost the capacity of the small editorial team to produce copy that intrigues and informs readers.
Founded in 1893, the RIBAJ is the award-winning, independent-minded official magazine of UK architecture. With a large circulation here and internationally, it enjoys a strong position in its sector. Recently relaunched in print and online, it operates on a digital-first basis with daily updates and a monthly paper publication.
The RIBA Journal is part of RIBA Enterprises, the commercial arm of the Royal Institute of British Architects. It is based in purpose-designed new premises in London’s West End by award-winning architects.
You need to have:
confident and excellent journalistic and editing skills, accuracy, a sound editorial judgment and the ability to generate ideas
a clear knowledge and understanding of digital journalism and social media – while still loving the characteristics of print
ability to identify clients’ individual stories, creating content marketing with strong commercial awareness
excellent project and client management skills and the ability to organise and motivate others
a track record of audience engagement through social channels
strong practical knowledge of tailored content for target audience engagement and SEO
clear understanding of copyright rules, image licensing
experience of CMS and email marketing systems is highly desirable
self-starter, able to work under pressure and confident in decision-making
adept at building and maintaining client relationships
excellent at managing deadlines and working as part of a busy team
willingness to record and edit video content
ideally a knowledge of architecture, design or construction
The job:
generate exciting, relevant, new content ideas for our professional audiences
research and write excellent, informed, balanced and thought-provoking editorial
commission photographers and contributors
coordinate with editorial team, graphic designer and subeditor on articles from concept through to publication
engage with industry, innovation and the profession, attending events, conferences and launches, visiting firms and people of interest
Guest content:
assist in the concept development of custom marketing projects, including supplements, events, awards and competitions
manage the delivery of contracted projects in a timely and organised fashion to budget
commission and manage graphic designers, sub-editors, photographers and contributors
liaise with the client in a cordial and charming way including proof sign-offs
coordinate with production manager on printing, production and distribution
take a metrics-driven approach to producing digital guest content
find and implement ways to increase site dwell time
use analytics to plan and position online content
