ENDS Europe is a digital-only daily news service dealing with all aspects of EU environmental policy including carbon, renewables, waste, pollution, and chemicals.
The service has circa 7,000 users based in UK and continental Europe. Typically readers are environmental policymakers, government officials, policy influencers, senior environment and regulatory affairs managers within multinational organisations – both public and private sector. Readers possess deep knowledge of most EU environment policies, therefore it is essential to provide an expert service for “insiders”.
The role
The deputy editor will be work closely with the editor to produce high quality editorial content for an expert audience. He/she will spend a significant amount of time supporting the editor in running day-to-day operations. This involves writing articles as well as commissioning and editing daily news stories delivered by the freelance and permanent editorial team in London and Brussels. When in charge of day-to-day operations, the successful candidate will also have to work with the production team to ensure that the articles are thoroughly checked before publication on the ENDS Europe’s website and in the daily news alert.
The deputy editor will also help produce in-depth articles and any special reports as required within budgets set by the ENDS publisher. The challenge is to produce killer content and exclusive stories, not widely available, that take the reader inside the Brussels policy-making process. A critical part of the job is to contextualise the stories within existing policy frameworks. However, it is also crucial to be able to explain the future implications and likely impacts in order to maintain ENDS Europe’s position as an expert and premium news service.
Job requirements
The deputy editor should help manage day-to-day implementation of content strategy set by the editor in conjunction with the publisher of ENDS, including:
Maintain the highest possible editorial standards
Ensure all content is produced on time, with appropriate quality control measures in place
Take responsibility for stylistic or legal issues arising from content
Establish and manage effective forward planning systems for all content
Generate and/or manage content ideas
Set high standards of behaviour, attitude, professionalism and commitment
The deputy editor should be a good ambassador of the product brand, including:
Participation in events, including public speaking and conference chairing
Play a key role in event brand developments (including conferences, networking events, etc)
The deputy editor should have excellent management skills, including:
Understand how to manage remote teams
Ensure good communication and teamwork with and between editorial staff
Ensure editorial staff are motivated and working well
Help manage recruitment and retention
