Director of IT Operations – University College London

Duties and Responsibilities:

The UCL Information Services Division (ISD) supports and enhances learning, teaching, research and a range of administrative processes across UCL through the provision of IT and information related services.

As part of ISD, the Director of IT Operations has principle responsibility for all IT operational services including infrastructure and applications provided to UCL. The range of services they are responsible for is wide. From IT services such as desktop to technology enabled services supporting e-learning and research IT.

The Director of IT Operations will manage a recurrent budget of £13m per annum, a capital budget of about £3m per annum and a team of 150 staff.

Key Requirements:

Applicants need to be graduate calibre with degree or equivalent.

They will need to demonstrate deep and substantial knowledge and experience of operational delivery, service management, strategy and technology in the infrastructure and application service domain. It is expected they will be recognised within their current organisation and the wider Information Technology community for their expertise in these areas. It is expected that they will be sought out for advice and insight both within their current organisation and sometimes by practitioners in other organisations and companies.

It will be important they can point to how they have developed and maintained their own knowledge at the forefront of current thinking in their field. Including how they have critically analysed new developments in Information Technology to quickly determine the potential impact of such developments on their services.

They will be a visionary leader with substantial and demonstrable experience of IT, leadership and management. Including undertaking several IT operational roles. Their experience will include running an IT operational team of similar scale and complexity to that at UCL.

Delivering technical change is an important aspect of the role and therefore applicants will need to demonstrate a solid understanding of the critical success factors for successful IT Project Delivery.

In addition applicants will need the ability to build relationships at all levels of the organisation. Capable of working with and earning the respect of senior customer stakeholders.
