Couture Furniture is a leading design and manufacturing company for luxury furniture. We have a team of designers and craftspeople all under one roof making fantastic pieces of furniture to incredibly high standards. If you’ve got a passion for furniture design, if you want to know what a bookmatched veneer looks like and how to produce it, or how we machine solid wood into a cocktail cabinet and then lacquer it in the deepest gloss, if you’ve got an eye for detail and think there’s always a way to make something better, then you might like to be part of Couture.
We are offering a paid internship for someone to work with the furniture design team. The studio and workshop are within the same building in Enfield, you will be working closely with the founding director, designer makers, makers and the studio assistant.
As well as contributing to the creative and productive atmosphere you will learn:
how to create an illustration or drawing of an idea for a customer to understand what we’re thinking and to get them excited about commissioning it to be made
how to turn a design drawing into a technical drawing that one of our makers can use to make the furniture
about all the different components essential to the function of a piece of furniture as well as how to select and order components
about the different woods, composite boards, veneers, lacquers, oils, finishes and materials and all their different properties
about joints, fixings, strengths, weak spots, counter balances, weights, adjustments, everything we know about making something as good as it can be
how to work in a professional busy environment where creative and commercial expectations have to be combined everyday
The ideal candidate will come with a background and passion for design, have an interest in materials and manufacturing, any experience using CAD, SketchUp and Photoshop would be advantageous. To really get anything of value and gain an understanding of the process that is involved in creating a good piece of furniture the internship will last 6 to 12 months, hours worked will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage plus a discretionary contribution to travel expenses. Days and hours of work are somewhat flexible and can be discussed at interview stage.
