Downside School is looking to appoint a genuinely inspiring Head of Art to lead its department.
Downside is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18, and one of England’s oldest and most distinguished Catholic schools. The school is situated at the foot of the Mendip Hills, twelve miles south of the city of Bath. Our Art Department has recently been refurbished to a very high standard, with a number of specialist studios including an iMac suite, a kiln and a Photography studio.
This is an excellent opportunity for a talented, creative and experienced teacher to lead our Art Department to its next stage of development, in a school which has a flourishing creative arts tradition.
The successful candidate will be able to take overall responsibility for the development of learning and teaching in Art, as well as departmental administration, and will motivate our pupils and the teaching team, including our Artist in Residence, to achieve their full potential. It is essential that the successful candidate is able to teach Art at GCSE and A level. The department aims to prepare pupils for further study of Art as well as giving them a thorough grounding in Art from Year 7 to Year 13.
Candidates for this role will be passionate about teaching pupils of the highest calibre up to and including Oxbridge entrance level. Our latest ISI inspection report states that ‘the quality of pupils’ achievement and learning is excellent’ and ‘the quality of teaching is excellent overall’. The successful candidate should possess the drive and determination to enthuse all pupils to reach the highest standards.
As a boarding School, all our Teachers engage fully in co-curricular activities and the boarding life of the School.
