Role overview:
The product designer will join our award-winning in-house design and development team and will be responsible for the development of new exciting products. You will be involved in the whole development cycle, ranging from initial concept exploration right through to the final production detailing. You will have a broad range of experience and knowledge within product design and come equipped with an excellent understanding of manufacturing processes and techniques to produce intelligent and well considered design solutions that make a real impact to the wider business.
Role focus:
provide design thinking and generation of aesthetic, functional and structural design concepts that surpass the requirements outlined in the design brief
confident self starter who is able to work both independently and within larger teams
responsible and enjoys the refinement of the engineering detail, specification of appropriate materials and a final production drawing pack to achieve aesthetic, functional and cost goals for the product intent
generation of test rigs, engineering models and prototypes (via our in-house facilities or through third party suppliers) at appropriate stages in the development to prove the validity of a design
concise communication throughout the process to provide key stakeholders with the required information and project updates
liaise and support internal and external stakeholders through ‘project hand-over’, tooling and manufacture
generate presentation materials to communicate design intent to other CBS departments and/or to support market research activities
support graphic design department and product manager in preparation of graphic support materials (e.g. product instructions, packaging labels, etc.)
provide any guidance and support on CAD housekeeping and engineering drawing procedures
Minimum requirements (key knowledge, skills and abilities):
3D CAD required, ideally Solidworks
natural problem solver and inquisitive ‘can do’ approach to design challenges
broad understanding of materials and production techniques required for volume manufacture, such as plastic injection moulding, sheet metal forming and aluminium die casting as minimum
self starter, working to an agreed timeline and within the project deliverables
professional and clear communication with manufacturers and suppliers to refine production details prior to tooling issue
have experience in the inspection and approval of 1st off tool samples for quality, dimensional accuracy and correct design intent
demonstrates previous experience, working from concept design through to ‘off tool’ manufactured product
experience in working with render packages/Adobe Suite would be an advantage but not essential
proficient with MS suite of products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Education, experience and requirements:
degree qualified as minimum in either Product Design or Design Engineering or equivalent
six plus years work experience required within consumer product design, design consultancy or equivalent preferred
a well rounded portfolio of innovative design experience that demonstrates exceptional design talent and experience from concept through to final manufactured product
