Leading Canary Wharf based publishing and contract publishing house is looking for a confident, creative and enthusiastic Senior Designer who is brimming with ideas to join its busy art department. The ideal candidate will have a strong magazine based portfolio and at least 5 years industry experience.
We publish a range of existing and new consumer titles and are on the lookout for a talented individual who can meet the rigorous demands of deadline driven projects without losing the flair or attention to detail that will make them a success in our team and to our clients.
Understanding the dynamics of magazine publishing, what makes a page work, interaction with advertising, creating strong concepts, contemporary and traditional, a passion for typography and the ability to translate ideas and concepts into a polished finished article are what we need. Understanding a client brief is paramount, and delivering pages that meet their vision is key.
Experience in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop is essential. It is also advantageous but not necessary to have worked on a digital publication before, and hold a basic understanding of html.
The successful candidate will be confident in all aspects of design, working on pitches, being able to take these ideas and create templates, producing, leading and managing the design and production of the entire publication/product right through to print. Our candidate will work closely with the Art Director and support junior members of the team on day-to-day activities. The ideal candidate must be prepared to do what it takes to meet schedules and targets, be comfortable liaising with clients at all levels through to approval of the finished magazine/product. This is a senior role within our team and we are looking for a bright and enthusiastic character who can hit the ground running.
KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Proven 5 years industry experience (preferably within a publishing / client driven environment)
Excellent knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite programs; InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator all essential, working knowledge of Word and Excel
Strong knowledge and interest of technology trends in digital media / online experience advantageous
Picture research
Art working and image uploading / good retouching skills
Excellent knowledge and understanding of typography
Strong publishing / magazine design experience
Responsible for design and innovation of all ongoing projects across all platforms
Continually submit ideas to develop and refine the look of our magazines typographically and photographically
Ensure all layouts are in the correct style; consistent typographically and visually, delivering the correct pace, visual hierarchy and continuity throughout each issue
Developing initial concepts, taking right through to live publications, creating templates, cover and layout design, inputting with editorial ideas, art working and producing entire publication through to print ready and thoroughly checking proofs
Design not only on a variety of magazines with different styles but also be confident in designing supplements, brochures, adverts, creating campaigns, website visuals and working on full re-brand projects
Work with clients on planning content, visuals and layouts
Experience of pitching and presenting would be advantageous as would project management experience
A keen eye for detail and very high standards
Strong organisation skills working across several projects at the same time meeting with strict concurrent deadlines
The ability to evolve and innovate design whilst working within brand guidelines
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work within a team but with self-motivation, leading the design of a handful of projects and prioritising workloads with excellent time management skills meeting the needs of the business
