Features Writer – William Reed Business Media – Crawley, England

Could you deliver online and in print the sort of sparkling and insightful features analysis that your average news story just can’t? Would you be as happy writing about market data as you would be speaking to a butcher about ideas that have transformed their business?

Meat Trades Journal, which embraces a magazine and two websites, is looking for a multi-media features writer to join our editorial team and write and commission print and online features content. The right candidate should be an experienced features writer able to marshal tools including infographics, galleries and video and audio podcasts to quickly and clearly enable readers to grasp industry issues of vital importance to them.

The multi-media features writer is to work alongside the editor in managing the provision of features content for the magazine and its online brand extensions, including globalmeatnews.com, as well as other ancillary products (supplements, etc).

They will write features and occasional news content and put briefs together for freelance features, commissioning them and making sure they are delivered in a timely manner and to a high quality. The role would also involve the exploration and use of multi-media tools, such as infographics, galleries, audio and video content to spice up online copy.

Key responsibilities & tasks:

Writing features and some news on a regular basis for the websites, magazine and supplements
Commissioning and briefing freelance and internal feature contributors, ensuring copy is of a high standard, factually accurate and legally safe
Helping to devise the magazine’s features schedule, in consultation with the editor and sales manager.
Liaising with the art desk and sub on the magazine’s features schedule, ensuring good copy-flow and associated imagery, design and graphics are sourced where appropriate
Applying creative ways to develop unique online features content and provide bespoke content to develop and showcase magazine features online, exploring appropriate multi-media tools, such as infographics, video, audio and galleries to enrich content and, where appropriate, link it to print and online news.
Liaising with the multi-media reporter on this, as well as on how to incorporate social media into the online and print features offering
Representing the magazine at external events and meetings
Supervising and mentoring of junior staff and regular freelance contributors in the course of their features writing, offering constructive advice and creative input where necessary
Helping to devise events and initiatives relevant to TJ’s coverage and editorial policies

While this job description aims to encapsulate the main aspects of the role of multi-media features writer, there may well arise other duties appropriate to the role during the day-to-day running of a busy trade magazine, so a key aspect is the need to remain flexible in the role and adapt to suit the changing needs of the magazine and the team
