Job Description
Taekwondo is a sport with over 60 million practitioners in over 200 countries. It originates from South Korea where the world governing body, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) is currently based. British Taekwondo is the National Governing body for WTF Taekwondo in Great Britain. British Taekwondo is also a member of the British Olympic Association (BOA), the European Taekwondo (ETU) and recognised by UK Sport, the government agency for High Performance Sport. British Taekwondo is responsible for all aspects of WTF/Olympic style taekwondo in the UK.
Our role includes working with affiliated clubs, athletic networks, officials, schools, coaches and other volunteers. We also provide national level competition and work on athlete development beneath the world class performance level.
British Taekwondo Ltd is managed by an Executive Board under the oversight of an Independent Chair and two Non-Executive Directors.
We are currently looking for a Non-Executive director to complement our Board skills and who possesses the commitment, drive and enthusiasm to make a tangible contribution to the commercial strategy of British Taekwondo alongside the other members of the Board. The Non-Executive Director shall possess extensive commercial experience gained at senior positions with leading private sector companies or sport entities.
You will need to demonstrate a strong commitment to British Taekwondo and a genuine interest in developing a sound corporate strategy and a robust governance framework to foster the number of Taekwondo participants in the UK.
Skills and experience required:
• Evidence of success and seniority in a professional career and being accustomed to a high level of accountability.
• Evidence of experience in senior commercial roles in particular in the development of commercial opportunities, sponsorship and marketing.
• Experience in serving on public sector, private sector or not-for-profit boards
• Desirable qualities would be a passion for Taekwondo and a knowledge or experience of its technical and political landscape
• Be able to challenge thinking and practice in a constructive and positive way using their excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Be able to demonstrate experience of managing change and working across boundaries.
• A proven ability to operate and plan at a strategic level.
• Be able to provide oversight of financial performance, internal controls and risk management.
• Champion corporate governance, finance and corporate social responsibility
• A track record of resilience, good judgement and decisiveness in pressured and tough circumstances.
• The skills and experience to influence decision making at Board level
• A passion for the community aspects of sport, particularly increasing participation
• An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being an Independent Director of a limited company
• The ability to contribute effectively to the board and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
• An understanding of WTF Taekwondo is not essential, but preferred.
Required time commitment: 12 days per annum. Board meetings are held four times per annum at British Taekwondo offices in Nottinghamshire and other locations in the United Kingdom.
