Job Description
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to start in October 2015. The project will be based in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University and the English Institute of Sport.
The Project: Could you shape the knowledge and expertise of the EIS? Could you work with and inspire all sport science and medicine practitioners in the EIS to make a difference? Do you have what it takes to work in high performance sport to inspire the most out of each individual? If so, read on. The EIS is proactive in managing the knowledge and expertise of its practitioners in support of Olympic and Paralympic athletes. This PhD will shape the Institute’s strategy for developing and sharing knowledge and expertise. You will be embedded within the EIS throughout this 4-year study to design and evaluate interventions through which the EIS will maximise organisational learning and resilience. The output of this PhD will be tangible, a novel learning model for knowledge intensive, not-for-profit organisations and the first ever for High Performance Sport Science and Medicine. The contribution of this PhD will therefore be twofold: 1) theoretical and empirical (including methodological) and 2) practical including real-world guidelines creating an innovative shift in practice and therefore the benchmark for knowledge management within the Olympic and Paralympic sector for the future. Note: 40% of your time will be dedicated to working as an applied knowledge management practitioner with the Head of Performance Knowledge based at the EIS in Loughborough. 60% of your time will be dedicated to developing the research programme at Loughborough University.
Students will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a Business Studies, Knowledge Management, Organisational Psychology, Sport Science, Sports Medicine or related subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of these will also be an advantage.
Supervisory Team: Dr Peter Brown (Head of Performance Knowledge, EIS), Dr David Fletcher (Senior Lecturer in Performance Psychology and Management, Loughborough University), Dr Rachel Arnold (Lecturer in Sport and Performance Psychology, University of Bath), Dr David Griffiths (Knowledge Management Consultant, K3-cubed Ltd).
Package: The studentship is for four years and provides a tax free stipend of £14,057 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International (non EU) students may apply but will need to find the difference in fees between those for a ‘UK/EU’ and ‘international’ student themselves.
Informal enquiries should be directed to:
