Could You Be The Next Spires Chair Of Trustees?
As Spires’ enters into its 25th year of successful service to the homeless and disadvantaged of South London, we are seeking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees to replace our current Chair who will be retiring at the end of 2015.
As the leader of the Board of trustees you will help to oversee the charity’s governance, shape our strategic vision and contribute to the leadership of this award-winning charity and help to ensure we use our resources effectively to achieve our vision of being the best support that we can in helping people move from lives of distress, isolation and insecurity to a future of greater stability and hope.
In addition to the duties of Trusteeship, the Chair is responsible for ensuring good governance, that the board functions effectively, that there is full participation at meetings with appropriate challenge and that effective decisions are made and carried out. The Chair also has an ambassadorial role in representing the vision and purpose of the organisation.
We welcome applicants who are enthusiastic about our work, who think strategically and who can contribute to the development and oversight of the charity as part of a team. The new Chair would be expected to participate actively in the life of Spires and ideally would bring with them professional skills in any of the following areas: general management, financial and strategic management and managing change and have strong personal skills. Most important of all: a personal commitment to making a positive contribution to the future development of Spires.
As Chair you will be asked to attend six Board meetings a year (held at our Centre in SW16), an annual away day, regular meeting meetings with the director of Spires and other trustees. Some time working from home will be required for miscellaneous matters; dealing with emails, planning etc.
As Chair of trustees you will not only find great satisfaction being part of a charity that positively helps its clients move on from the most difficult of life’s circumstances but also benefit from the personal challenge and growth from working alongside an interesting and lively Board that includes a finance director, accountant, trade union official, newspaper column editor, management consultant, retired solicitor and the rector of the local Anglican Church.
The role of Chair of Trustees is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although reasonable expenses (such as travel) may be claimed.
