Chairperson – Boxing Scotland

Job Description
Boxing Scotland is seeking to appoint a Chairperson of its Board of Directors.
The position of Chair is crucial in facilitating the effective work of the Board as well as supporting the work of Boxing Scotland staff to ensure the delivery of the Strategic Plan.

The Chairperson will help shape the future of Scottish Boxing through supporting, leading and advising the Governing Body in a challenging period of growth and expansion. We are looking for someone with a desire and drive to make a difference. This opportunity presents great potential for the development of new/existing skills, meeting new people, developing new networks and making a lasting positive impact on the development of amateur boxing in Scotland.

We are looking for a motivated, committed and innovative person to take up this important role. The successful candidate will also enjoy the support of a diverse and strong Board representing a wide range of skills and knowledge.

The BSL Board of Directors has the following remit:
• Provide good governance of Boxing Scotland to ensure that the organisation delivers against the corporate strategic plan through meeting annual targets;
• Plan for the development of Boxing Scotland, including reviewing its long term vision and strategy;
• Support and mentor the Management Team;
• Review reports on Income and Expenditure;
• Act as Project Sponsor for a variety of projects;
• Maintain a current knowledge of the Board’s activities, the work of Boxing Scotland and the work of the relevant disciplines and partner associations;
• Represent and consider recommendations from BSL Committees/working groups;
• Together with the Board and CEO report to the membership annually.

The key responsibilities and skills required for the BSL Chairperson role will include:
• Excellent interpersonal, leadership and influencing skills to lead the Board and play a key role in the development of strategy
• A strong understanding and observance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a Chair of a not for profit organisation;
• Chairing BSL Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting;
• Promoting the interests of the organisation, its purpose and BSL members;
• The capacity to consistently demonstrate impartiality and integrity in a multi-stakeholder environment;
• Engage with the sport as a whole through attendance at meetings and events;
• Work closely with the CEO to oversee the delivery of the 4 year strategy and annual plans;
• Ensure effective governance throughout the organisation;

CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION OF CHAIRPERSON
Essential
• The ability to lead with confidence;
• Significant expertise in one or more of political influencing, marketing, high performance sport, finance, education, development, equalities or governance;
• Knowledge of contemporary issues within sport;
• Proven strategic governance and decision making skills with the ability to prioritise and commit time to the role;
• Knowledge of financial and budgetary controls;
• A firm understanding of and commitment to ethical issues within society and within sport;
• Understanding of the relationship between Boxing Scotland and other key external partners;
• Managing and maintaining strong, transparent relationships with key stakeholders and the ability to support, challenge and build relationships with Board members and the CEO is also key;
• An interest in sport and understanding of the wider Scottish sporting landscape;
• Recent experience of chairing Boards or committees.
Desirable
• Understanding of the roles of AIBA, EUBC and GB Boxing;
• Understanding of the sport of boxing and the specific opportunities and challenges facing Boxing Scotland;
• Experience of the delivery of governance in a changing environment with a commitment to positive change;
• Detailed understanding of the Boxing Scotland structure;
• Proven experience of working with key external partners.

HONORARIA AND TENURE
Tenure will be for up to a 4 year term for a maximum of two terms unless agreed otherwise by the Executive Board, on a case by case basis.

Further information:
• There is an honorarium payable;
• Expenses will be paid in accordance with BSL financial policies and procedures;
• The role may involve some home national and international travel.

INTERVIEWS
Applicants will be interviewed by a panel consisting of:
• Vice Chair;
• Interim CEO;
• 1 Further Director;
• 1 sportscotland representative.
