Job Description
ABOUT ACCESS SPORT
Access Sport CIO is a charity that is dedicated to enhancing the life prospects of disadvantaged young people and those from marginalised groups by providing opportunities to experience and enjoy the power of sport.
We do this by building thriving community sports clubs, led by inspirational volunteers, in the most disadvantaged urban areas. These clubs provide life-changing opportunities for local, vulnerable people, whilst creating a lasting, locally-owned community resource.
Access Sport’s unique methodology has won multiple awards including the national BT Sports Industry Award for Community Programme of the Year 2015 and the Sports Business Awards Best Sports Charity, Community and CSR 2017.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROLE
Despite the increased attention on female participation and disability inclusion in sport, it is still the case that there are 2 million fewer women than men regularly playing sport, with only 31% of women taking part in sport at least once a week. Meanwhile, disabled people are twice as likely to be inactive as non-disabled people in the UK.
Sport England’s statistics show that women and girls, ethnic minorities, disadvantaged and disabled young people face systemic barriers to sport and physical activity.
In disadvantaged areas levels of inactivity are even higher and with increasing strain on our public health service, as well as the damaging effects to the individual, this is something that cannot be ignored. Access Sport believes cycling is uniquely placed to tackle the stubborn inequalities in sport, so our cycling inclusion work is of strategic importance to the charity.
The charity firmly believes community clubs have a vital role to play in bringing our vision to life. We’re therefore on a mission to make sure anyone is able to attend any bike club and know they’ll be made to feel welcome – whatever their age, gender, race, religion, ability, disability or social background.
Whilst many clubs advertise themselves as ‘everybody welcome’ the reality is often quite different. Unless clubs understand the challenges faced by women and girls, deaf, disabled or disadvantaged young people and have the skills, confidence and session to meet these people’s needs, it’s unlikely new attendees will have an enjoyable experience.
To help clubs better meet the needs of diverse communities, and we’ve designed a series of inclusive projects for specific groups who typically feel left out. ‘Wingz’ Cycling, ‘BMXercise’ and WoW (Women on Wheels) are three of the key inclusion products we offer to clubs, and we’re looking to expand the number of inclusive club sections using these products.
