Communications Manager – Sport (Maternity Cover) – British Olympic Association

Job Description

The BOA’s primary purpose is to:
– Select, lead and manage Team GB at Olympic and Olympic Winter Games and all International Olympic Committee (IOC) and European Olympic Committee (EOC) accredited events such as Youth Olympic Games, European Youth Olympic Festivals and the European Games, and;
– Develop the Olympic Movement and promote the principles and values of Olympism in our territory of responsibility.
The BOA is independent and privately funded. The success of our mission is entirely dependent upon the income we receive from our commercial programmes, including but not limited to sponsorship, fundraising, licensing and events. The BOA is the United Kingdom’s National Olympic Committee and the strong, independent voice for British Olympic sport responsible for promoting the Olympic movement throughout the UK.

Overview of the Role:
The Communications Manager (Sport) is a maternity cover role fixed term for a maximum 12 months. The Postholder will be responsible for communications and media operations across a broad spectrum, both proactively and reactively, managing media operations around major events and announcements. This person will administer the Olympic media accreditation process, and be responsible for responding to requests for information and assistance from the media and key internal and external stakeholders in a timely, accurate and professional manner.
The candidate will ideally have a strong communications and media operations experience, either directly within sport or with relatable experience if within a different sector and have major event experience in either a communications or media operations capacity. They should be able to demonstrate the ability to work with multiple groups of stakeholders.
The role involves interface with colleagues across the wider communications function, while also working very closely with the Digital, Marketing and Commercial teams at the BOA to support the delivery of the communications strategy and Team GB’s Tokyo 2020 campaign.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead on the development and activation of the Tokyo 2020 Team Announcement series. The team announcement series and related activations are underway but future announcements are still in development stage and will require planning alongside the wider communications, marketing and digital team.
This will involve driving and managing the team announcement series via:
o Managing relationships with National Governing Bodies
o Managing relationships with athletes to ensure maximum exposure for their profile/story
o Working closely with the commercial team to ensure our partners contractual rights are reflected in activity undertaken
o Ensuring the Team GB brand is well represented through branding and media attendance
2. Manage and administer the Olympic summer and Winter Games Media Accreditation process for the domestic media.
3. Recruitment of the Team GB Tokyo 2020 UK-based media roles and the development of the Team GB Tokyo 2020 media team training programme.
4. Work closely with UK Sport on the implementation of Tokyo 2020 Athlete Media Training Programme.
5. Work closely with the Head of Marketing and Senior Managing Victory Officer to develop and implement Managing Victory plans for Tokyo 2020 including the integration of commercial, digital and media activity at Team GB House in Tokyo. Managing Victory is a bespoke media strategy to support medal-winning and other high-profile athletes’ stories at Tokyo 2020.
6. Working with the Head of Marketing to support the Team GB Tokyo 2020 Marketing Campaign identifying key media activity in support of the campaign’s objectives.
7. Work closely with the Head of Marketing to create specific communications and PR strategies to showcase the Team GB Tokyo 2020 Ambassador programme.
8. Fulfil the role of Deputy Chief Press Attaché for Tokyo 2020 with a responsibility to:
o Deliver all media and communication activities at the Tokyo 2020 Team GB Preparation Camp in Yokohama, Tokyo
o Manage media operations and opportunities at the Quiet Training Venue (Odaiba School)
o Lead on all media operational matters, including the build of the Main Press Centre media office, press conference booking, media ticketing etc.
o Act as back up for Media Officers as appropriate (e.g. facilitate mixed zone and post-performance interviews)

Other responsibilities include:
Events – Lead media and communications support of BOA events such as Team GB Ball and Homecoming event.
Stakeholder Management – Lead on communications and media relationships with key sporting stakeholders such as the IOC, UK Sport, Home Country Sports Institutes, NGBs and other relevant sporting bodies, athletes, coaches and agents as appropriate.
Draft copy for media releases and contribute to communications script.
Monitor the annual Communications budget for the remainder of 2020 within agreed parameters and protocols.
Support the content team with the creation of brand-led content as required.

Key relationships and Interfaces:
This role involves a high level of liaison with all BOA internal teams, external partners, agencies, stakeholders and suppliers. Close working relationships with the Marketing, Sport Engagement, Digital and Commercial teams to deliver on objectives. This role reports to the Director of Communications.

Candidate Specification:
A media and communications professional with a demonstrable and strong track record of the following:
• 5+ years’ experience working in a communications or media operations role at national and/or international level.
• Successfully implementing a media or media operations strategy
• Collaborative relationship building with a variety of stakeholders
• Understanding of media operations at major events
• Olympic-related experience with a sport’s National Governing Body or partner is preferred
• Budget planning and management

Candidates must be able to work flexible times during busy Olympic Games periods and events. Must have a hunger to learn and ability to flourish in a dynamic, high-growth environment. Must be able to work under continual deadline constraints.
