Job Description
Purposes of the post:
To develop, implement and shape London Sport’s Communication Strategy, making London Sport the leading voice for sport in London. Management of the organisation’s press function, and the management of external reputation and profile activities.
Main activities and responsibilities:
1. Continue to develop and manage a press office infrastructure for London Sport, including media training and monitoring/evaluation functions.
2. Oversee the management of any contracts held with agencies commissioned to deliver the communications work.
3. Support the Director of Business Development, Marketing and Communications in developing and implementing communication strategies for corporate partnership projects and campaigns.
4. Lead on the day-to-day implementation of media relations and corporate social media activity.
5. Provide advice and guidance to the Senior Management Team (SMT) and colleagues on media and communications issues, including media briefings, question and answer documents, message and media training.
6. Develop issues/crisis management strategy and plan for London Sport, and implement where necessary.
7. Build profile for London Sport with key journalists, bloggers and opinion formers through a programme of briefings and ‘getting to know’ sessions for Corporate Communications Manager and SMT.
8. Work with SMT to develop and manage the London Sport approach to Public Affairs, to include engaging with MPs and Councillors and co-ordinating responses to consultations where appropriate.
9. Work with the Director of Business Development, Marketing and Communications to monitor and maintain rigorous media relations processes, ensuring that all media materials are proofed, edited and produced/launched to the highest possible quality and to deadline.
10. To work closely with the Marketing and Communications Manager and team, ensuring consistent activity across corporate communications and marketing.
11. Ensure communications activities are co-ordinated and promoted throughout London Sport and maximise opportunities for integration through all communications.
12. To regularly gather media monitoring data and feedback to identify service improvements and to incorporate these into plan refinements.
13. To propose constructive challenges to the Operational Management Team and, where requested, propose clear and costed proposal for new or improved services or programmes.
14. To positively engage with other Development Managers and wider colleagues to ensure co-ordination, integration and synergy between programmes and work strands.
15. To performance manage, coach and support reporting staff and ensure that they have clear goals and objectives.
16. To plan, manage, monitor and report on programme budgets.
17. To ensure self-development of skills and knowledge as required by the role and to act as London Sport’s expert for the programme.
18. To continually seek best practice and strive to identify and implement service improvement.
19. To undertake any other duties deemed relevant by the Director of Business Development, Marketing and Communications.
Location:
The role will be located primarily in London Sport office in central London but travel to attend meetings and carry out other work-related duties will be required across the whole of London and occasional beyond.
Person Specification and Selection Criteria:
A. Be educated to degree level or higher.
B. Have good knowledge and experience of working in the physical activity and sport landscape.
C. Have a proven track-record relevant to this post and of building relationships with community organisations and supporting them to develop.
D. Have a detailed understanding of the needs of clubs/front-line organisations and the challenges that they face.
E. Experience of successful project implementation including budget management.
F. Sound critical thinking and decision making skills.
G. Excellent communication and inter-personal skills; the ability to enthuse, persuade, market, negotiate and influence in person and in writing.
H. Good organisational skills; the ability to manage self and projects, prioritise and meet deadlines.
I. Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
J. Ability to work under pressure and to adopt a flexible approach to working methods.
K. Good IT skills including using excel.
L. Able to demonstrate an understanding of equality, diversity and safeguarding and their practical application.
M. A commitment to personal development.
