Deputy Editor – Meat Trades Journal – William Reed Business Media – Crawley, England

Meat Trades Journal is looking for an experienced and organised journalist to fill the role of deputy editor, working alongside the editor in the delivery of the magazine and its online brand extensions, meatinfo.co.uk and globalmeatnews.com, as well as ancillary products, including supplements and awards.

Helping to co-ordinate the team, taking key responsibilities for features and assisting with the news desk, the deputy has responsibilities stretching across all aspects of MTJ ensuring that all output meets the expected standard and quality in line with the publications strategy.

Key responsibilities & tasks:

Writing news and features on a regular basis for both the website, magazine and supplements
Maintaining and managing the team diary, ensuring team members movements are accounted for and ensuring movements have appropriate permission from the editor
Helping to ensure the smooth running of MTJ’s online operations, both through the meatinfo.co.uk website, and globalmeatnews.com. Also ensure that social media output is maintained, in the form of twitter on a day to day basis, and more long term initiative, such as supporting F2F activity through the likes of Facbook etc.
Running the MTJ Features desk to ensure planned features and off plan features are lively, balanced and relevant to our readership – running planned, monthly features meetings with MTJ team
Managing the commissioning and briefing of freelance contributors with regard to features and news, ensuring copy is of a high standard, factually accurate and legally safe
Liasing with the art desk and sub on the magazine’s features schedule, ensuring good copy-flow and associated imagery is sourced where appropriate
Assisting in managing the news desk, helping to ensure high standards of copy as well as promoting lively, exclusive, strong news stories are brought in
Ensuring copy flow to the two websites, assisting in making sure high value, exclusive content is supplied to Globalmeatnews.com on a daily basis
Helping to manage the copy flow of news from junior reporters and smooth day-to-day running of the magazine
Working with the editor, and in his absence, to manage the day-to-day operational running of the magazine, providing constructive feedback where necessary
Passing pages and sections in the editor’s absence – ensuring legal matters are correct and ensuring the design of the magazine is consistent.
Liasing with the commercial team where appropriate and in the absence of the editor working with the ad manager to produce flat plans
Representing the magazine at external events and meetings and deputising for the editor where necessary at internal meetings
Supervising and mentoring of junior staff and regular freelance contributors, offering constructive advice and creative input where necessary
Devising and helping to organise events and initiatives relevant to MTJ’s coverage and editorial policies
Working to ensure the smooth flow of supplements, overseeing junior members’ production where appropriate
Building and maintaining industry contacts and mentoring and assisting junior team members to do the same
While this job description aims to encapsulate the main aspects of the role of deputy editor, there may well arise other duties appropriate to the role during the day to day running of a busy trade magazine, so a key aspect is the need to remain flexible in the role and adapt to suit the changing needs of the magazine and the team
