The Great Run Company specialise in the development, design and organisation of the biggest and best televised mass participation sporting events across the country. This includes the Great Run Series, most notably the Great North Run, the world’s largest half marathon. Other events within our portfolio include the Great Swim Series across 5 different venues, the Great City Games and the Go Run for Fun campaign.
Job Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a graduate with 1-2 year event experience to join the Great Run Company as an Event Manager.
Due to our growing portfolio of events we are looking for an ambitious Event Manager with a passion for sport to come and join us. You will be responsible for planning, coordinating, delivering and controlling event projects within The Great Run Company’s portfolio. This is a challenging and fast paced role where the work needs to adapt to meet market conditions, developments in guidance & practice, and the often changing face of the city centre venues that we work in.
Main duties and responsibilities
The Event Manager will provide logistical and planning support to existing event projects & event managers in their initial period and will by the end of year 1 be expected to take responsibility for the lead delivery role on an event before taking on a wider role across a number of events within The Great Run Company’s portfolio. Overall task duties include:
•Event feasibility and budget planning
•Event content creation
•Project planning including full task definition and resource allocation
• Managing relationships with suppliers, crew, volunteers, emergency services & local authority stakeholders
• Cost management control through all aspects of project delivery
• Create and management of safety systems at the event alongside The Great Run Company’s event control, site safety and medical advisers
•Safe and efficient delivery of live outdoor events
•Satisfying the specific event requirements of participants, sponsors, media partners, and spectators
Skills and experience
•Ideally degree educated with 1-2 years event experience
•Demonstrable experience in successful event delivery, ideally in the mass sporting arena.
•A real desire to work in events
•Creative thinker with creative vision: being able to see an event and work towards that goal
•Understanding of how to plan and control an event
•A good working knowledge of applicable legislation & guidance
•Experience of managing budgets
•Strong leadership skills
•Good communication skills
•Good written and presentation skills
•Attention to detail
•Practical experience of hands on event roles including basics such as general build, site support and equipment set up
•A flexible approach: we work weekends, and the successful applicant will be expected to work in the region of 12-14 weekends each season
Other information
•This role requires some travel across the UK, planning events and working on other sites
•There is a requirement to work long hours around events as well as away from home for several days for both planning and event delivery periods
• Weekend work is expected and necessary to deliver the calendar of events
