Head of Sport: Hockey – Monkton Combe School

Job Description
We are seeking to appoint a dedicated and professional Head of Sport to join at an exciting time for
Monkton as we look to take sport forward with a whole school approach. We welcome applications from
individuals with extensive coaching or playing experience. The successful candidate will be an exceptional
coach required to lead boys and girls hockey. They will set the standards and the vision for a large and
successful department, in effect shaping the morale of both the department and the pupils of the school
through their coaching, management and the inspiration with which they lead the sport.
This position would report to and work under the Director and Assistant Director of Sport to deliver the
hockey program across the school. They would be joining a hardworking and friendly Sports department
who will all be working across the whole school.
The aim of the role is to represent Monkton School and to support the school’s objective of providing
excellent standards of sports throughout all interactions with parents and pupils, providing a friendly and
professional point of contact, while also upholding and applying the Monkton School values and mission
statement.

Responsibilities will include:
Strategic
● Leading boys and girls Hockey across the 3 schools
● To develop a 3-18 curriculum/Monkton brand for their sports, working with the Director and Assistant Director of Sport
● To support our schools’ co-curricular aims of breadth, participation and excellence
● To aim to encourage all pupils to develop a lifelong love of sport
General
● To share expertise, training sessions etc to support coaches across the schools having an equivalent of 40 x 40 minutes contact time each week
● To work with the Director of Sport to create an appropriate budget for their sports including any external coaches.
● To coordinate purchase and use of equipment for their sports across the schools.
● Actively promote Monkton Sport using Social Media, Monktonian, Newsletters etc.
● To provide 1:1 coaching of students outside of their lessons (similar to Learning Support model) quantity to be overseen by the Director of Sport
To work on Sundays and in the school holidays to run tours, camps, preseason and individual lessons, which is likely to equate to at least 15 days.
● To support other sports at Monkton as directed by the Director and Assistant Director of Sport.
● Teach PE to year 9 and below but unlikely to include GCSE and A-Level PE teaching.
Administrative
● To organise fixtures, tournaments and cup matches for their sport with oversight of the Director
and Assistant Director of Sport
● To liaise with transport, grounds, sewing room and catering on a regular basis to ensure relevant
facilities available.
● To contact parents with changes, cancellations for their sports fixtures and to be their first point
of contact.
● Ensure that there is a detailed weekly schedule for pupils and staff appropriately communicated.
● To stay up to date with current best practice and NGB guidelines and provide CPD opportunities
to coaching staff.
● Ensuring SOCS is kept uptodate with teams and results.
● To ensure that reports are written by the correct member of staff.
● Support Director and Assistant Director as required for example with Colours, Sports Dinner,
Risk Assessments etc.
Other
● To be involved in the wider life of the school through boarding duties, tutoring etc.
● For the right applicant further boarding responsibilities coming with accommodation may be
available.

Coaching Ethos: Monkton staff are committed to continuing to hone and improve our practice in different
areas. We intentionally reflect on our professional development throughout the year. As part of this, and
to support it, we train staff in coaching skills, and staff coach each other, as well as gaining valuable skills
to use day to day. Over the next three years, our aim is to train all staff in coaching.
