Independent Director with proven commercial acumen
The BMC is the national representative body for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers in England and Wales; we have 82,000 members, 30 staff, a dedicated volunteer network and our head office is based in West Didsbury, Manchester.
We are seeking an independent member to join our board of directors (Executive Committee) of eight individuals.
The BMC’s board provides strategic direction, supports the operational management and helps promote our activities in England and Wales. The successful candidate will be expected to scrutinize plans and decisions in a constructive way and help guide the future development of the BMC. Key responsibilities will include:
• Helping set long term strategic direction.
• Approving the allocation of funds and monitoring operational and financial performance.
• Contributing in discussions to reach balanced decisions in relation to the development and implementation of our strategic plan.
We are seeking an individual with a strong background in the business / commerce / marketing sphere, ideally with skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Membership organisations and associated business systems.
• Business development.
• Online marketing.
• Customer recruitment and retention.
The board meets quarterly in Manchester (7.00-10.00pm, Wednesday evenings). The new director will also find it useful to attend occasional National Council meetings which take place 4-5 times per year in mountain and coastal locations across in England and Wales. Business between meetings (email, conference calls) will have a typical weekly time commitment of 3-6 hours.
This is a voluntary position with a current 3 year term; travel and accommodation expenses are payable.
An interest in climbing or hill walking would be useful but is not essential.
