Nightingale Senior Clinical Fellows – ROYAL DEVON & EXETER NHS FOUNDATION TRUST – Exeter

The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E)
provides Acute and Community services across Exeter and East Devon serving a population of more than 450,000 people. In our latest CQC full inspection of our services, the RD&E received an overall rating of “good”. We were rated as “outstanding” for our Emergency and Critical Care services, and for Caring Trustwide.
The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust has been ranked as the joint best performing non-specialist Trust in the country for overall patient experience of care in the 2016 Care Quality Commission (CQC) Adult Inpatient Survey.
The main hospital site is in the historical Cathedral city of Exeter that has abundant family amenities and beautiful surrounding countryside. It is situated in the middle of the South West Region with easy access to the countryside and coast of Devon and Cornwall. It is well served by rail, road and air links. Good educational facilities such as the University of Exeter and good Ofsted rated schools are available locally. Our Community sites are equally well positioned and are a good place to work.
Enjoy a good quality of life in the South West and be part of our caring workforce.
Senior Clinical Fellows (Medicine ST3 + or IMT3 equivalence) – South West England
These posts present a unique opportunity to pursue a chosen specialty and provide support for the South West in the event of a surge in COVID19.

Senior clinical fellow positions (equivalent to registrar)
are available in a range of medical specialties, including acute medicine, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, healthcare for the elderly, endocrinology and cardiology. These positions will be based at one of the four Devon acute trusts: University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust, North Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust or the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. Successful applicants will be matched to available posts according to their preferences of hospital and specialty. If and when the Nightingale Hospital Exeter (NHE) is needed to support the region’s response to COVID19, post holders will be deployed 50% to NHE, remaining within their base trust 50%. The posts are for 12 months, commencing August 2020. Applications for 6 months posts will also be considered.
NHE is the seventh and most recent Nightingale Hospital to be commissioned by the NHS to help manage the COVID19 pandemic. Following completion in early July, it will be maintained in a state of standby, and ready to receive patients at 7 days’ notice should the need arise in the coming months. NHE is part of the region’s plan for an integrated response to COVID19. The hospital has 116 beds, and can offer both ward-based and intensive care. Successful candidates will be part of the team dedicating to providing the highest standards of care to COVID19 patients admitted to NHE, and will undergo specific training in preparation for this. NHE differs from the earlier Nightingales in that it offers predominantly a ward-based care environment, similar to a respiratory or general medical ward. ITU experience is not required.

These positions
will be fully embedded in the chosen specialty and are excellent for training. They will particularly suit individuals looking to enhance or acquire specialist skills. When NHE is open, it is anticipated that post holders will rotate between the specialty in their base trust and duties at NHE on a 6 weekly basis. Therefore, all normal activities in that specialty will be able to occur, including the provision of procedural lists. Training will be a core focus, including ensuring specialist skills are achieved. Attachment to NHE will include protected time for education, simulation and ePortfolio. Contracts will be compliant with the 2018 junior doctor contract refresh. However, candidates will need to accept redeployment from the acute trust to NHE at short notice, with an alteration to the rota, if and when NHE becomes operational.

Trainees in current training programmes could be potentially released under OOPP (Out Of Programme Pause) and those considering this can have an informal discussion prior to application. We are open to tailoring part of your year to your specific training needs, whether this is procedures, clinics or simulation.
Accommodation can be provided during periods of attachment to NHE for those travelling long distances.
Applicants should indicate their preferences in terms of acute trust and specialty on the application, as well as the preferred duration of the post (6 or 12 months).
