Job Description
The Boat Race Company is a company limited by Guarantee (no. 02544376) established by the Oxford and Cambridge Rowing Foundation to deliver the annual Boat Race between Cambridge University and Oxford University.
The Boat Race is one of the major British sporting events of the year. 2020 will see the 166th Men’s Boat Race and the 75th Women’s Boat Race and will be the fifth time that the male and female crews will compete on the same day over the same course.
The event attracts over 400,000 spectators to the banks of the championship course between Putney and Chiswick and through our partnership with the BBC we reach over 6 million people across the world.

Like many organisations The Boat Race needs to develop a stronger financial footing and effective relationships with key partners and stakeholders. The Board is looking to expand its current membership, by recruiting up to four new independent directors, to support our small executive team and help strengthen our collective ability to do this.
Skills and Experience
We are particularly keen to attract interest from individuals with experience in one of the following areas:
marketing and communications including digital engagement;
engaging corporate partners and securing sponsorship.
We are also interested in candidates who may have major event management experience.
In addition, we would expect all candidates to be able to demonstrate:
strategic vision,
independent judgement,
an ability to think creatively
a willingness to speak your mind.
What do we mean by ‘independent’
Whilst many of the individuals who may be attracted to these roles will have a connection with Oxford or Cambridge and/or rowing, it is not a requirement of the role and indeed applications from individuals with none of these connections are very much encouraged!
Those who do have an association or affinity with one or more of the boat clubs involved in the race will be expected not to hold, or to step down from, any formal role on related committees.
As a member of the Board of the Boat Race Company you will not be representing the views of any specific club, and along with all other Directors, will need to act in the interests of the Company.
Time and commitment:
Board members are expected to attend each of the four Board meetings per annum which usually take place in the evenings in central London as well as an additional strategy session.
Board members are also expected to attend key events for the company throughout the year including the Boat Race itself (this year on Sunday 29 March 2020).
Board members will also be asked to take on specific projects or provide ad hoc support to the executive staff on specific issues from time to time.
The time commitment, including preparing for meetings, is estimated to equate to approximately 15 to 20 days per annum in total.
You will need to be able to make a commitment to the Boat Race Company and be able to devote the necessary time to the role.
Term:
The appointment is for a four-year term, and up to two consecutive terms may be served.
