Social Media Editor – The Weather Channel Global Media Ltd – London

Position Summary

Weather.com is expanding. The leading website and app for weather news and information has an opportunity for a Social Media Editor. This person will build its social media presence and drive traffic to The Weather Channel UK’s digital and mobile platforms. The ideal candidate will have a passion for all things online and the latest developments in social media.

Essential to this role is a proven track record of building Facebook profile and engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage all of the Weather Channel UK’s social platforms
Create content to engage and retain audience via social promotion
Build and retain social audience on the Weather Channel’s social platforms
Work closely with the editorial and video teams to create relevant content
Generate new story ideas from current events, interesting content (photo, video) and breaking news stories within the applicable content area (i.e., internet/viral, home page, science, health, travel, photo, etc.)
Evaluate and determine which stories are most relevant to users and most likely to drive increased traffic from among stories; develop analytics to track user behaviour and modify content accordingly

Education, Experience, Certification Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or related field or equivalent work experience
3 – 5 years editing experience
Experience in breaking news environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Understanding of copyright and facility in securing the rights to images and videos
A deep understanding of how to produce traffic by way of social media and what drives audience engagement
Ability to visualise abstract concepts and develop them into story ideas.
Sharp writing and editing skills
Knowledge of SEO best practices
Ability to craft headlines that engage audiences
Proficient in Adobe Photoshop
Responsive to breaking news
High comfort level with various content management systems
Knowledge of HTML
Ability to direct work and lead teams through content development
