The Human Performance Unit (HPU) provides a combination of applied sports science, coaching and schools engagement services within the School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Science (SRES) at the University of Essex.
Duties of the Role
The Human Performance Unit (HPU) Sports Scientist will be responsible for be the delivery of sports science services to external clients, including professional and amateur sports teams, amateur and elite individual sports people, sporting organisations, University performance sport and commercial sports product manufacturers.
The HPU deliver a number of school taster sessions focused toward year 12 and 13 sports science students. The aim of these sessions is to offer a curriculum specific, enrichment experience that supports the educational needs of the students. The successful post holder will oversee the implementation of these education sessions whilst having the autonomy to develop new innovative sessions.
The dual-focus of the sports scientist will enable them to develop both pedagogical and technical skills within an applied sports science unit. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and experience in a coaching capacity by supporting the coaching services offered by the HPU.
Other activities will include the delivery of workshops to athletic groups on and off-campus, promoting commercial services by attending sporting events and driving the social media presence of the HPU.
Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will hold a degree in Sports Science, Exercise Physiology or a closely related qualification.
In addition, you will have experience of sports science laboratory and field testing procedures and equipment, having delivered applied sports science support to athletes and/or sports teams. Ideally, you will also have experience of working with, and delivering educational sessions to young people and schools groups.
We expect the successful candidate to possess initiative, be pro-active and have the ability to multi-task. Additionally, great interpersonal skills are required to communicate with a wide range of audiences.
