Trustee – SportsAid

Job Description
SportsAid is seeking two to three new trustees to lead on and develop the charity’s work helping the next generation of British sporting talent. This is an exciting role directly connected to the purpose and passion of the charity’s work and a rare opportunity to join a committed and driven team. It will require a passion to help young people, a keen interest in sport, a good understanding of the charity sector and strong interpersonal skills.
Sound commercial experience is of particular interest with strengths in fundraising/business development, marketing communications – especially digital – and strategy planning. You will have experience in management and leadership roles. You will join the Board – currently made up of seven Trustees – in supporting the charity, planning for the future and ensuring the highest standards of integrity and good governance. You can make a difference.
SportsAid supports over 1,000 athletes each year – largely aged 12 to 18 – by providing them with a financial award, recognition and personal development opportunities. These athletes are nominated by the national governing bodies of more than 60 sports – most of which are Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. The majority receive no funding, other than that from the charity, which means they are heavily reliant on their parents to meet the costs of their sport.
SportsAid has supported tens of thousands of athletes during the critical early stages of their careers, including Jessica Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Sarah Storey and Steve Redgrave, among its extensive alumni. Laura Kenny, Ellie Simmonds, Adam Peaty, Tom Daley and Dina Asher-Smith are more recent examples of athletes. The charity’s impressive track record was highlighted at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games where SportsAid alumni won 150 medals.
The minimum commitment as a Board member will be to attend four board meetings per year – typically held in London – plus one half-day induction session and one half-day strategy planning session; there will be an additional time commitment as you become involved with one of SportsAid’s sub-committees and in supporting the promotional work of the charity. Board positions are unremunerated but reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.
SportsAid believes that diversity drives excellence and that representation is important in order to reflect diverse communities in 21st century Britain. SportsAid therefore positively welcomes, and seeks to ensure we achieve, diversity in our workforce and that all job applicants, volunteers and employees receive equal and fair treatment.
The charity positively encourages applications from all candidates regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, disability, marriage and civil partnership status, gender identity, background, religion, faith, sexual orientation, maternity status, pregnancy, belief or nationality. On receipt of your application you will be sent a confidential equal opportunities form which all applicants will be asked to complete.
