With the recent reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act, understanding the safety of chemicals in everyday products just got exciting in the US.
Chemical Watch provides companies throughout supply chains around the world with risk and regulatory news, as well as information to help them manage chemicals in products safely. It is a subscription product and a recognised leader in its field.
We are looking for a dynamic North American reporter in the Washington, DC area to join our staff. The right person will work with, and support, our current North American editor in researching and writing essential news on legislation, compliance and implementation issues.
Specific activities will include reporting on actions by:
the US EPA – ranging from assessments and control of new and existing substances, to its Safer Choice programme and enforcement;
the Consumer Product Safety Commission relating to substance restrictions;
the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, especially on implementation of HazCom 2012;
the Food and Drug Administration’s regulation of cosmetic ingredients and food contact materials;
state legislatures, including California’s ground breaking Safer Consumer Products programme and Prop65 listings;
Canadian authorities relating to the country’s Chemicals Management Plan and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System; and
companies and NGOs.
We are looking for someone with at least two years of experience. The position is full-time, staff and home-based.
An appreciation of the science behind such controls is useful, but not essential.
Other skills include:
an ability to write clearly, accurately and translate complex themes and issues into news and features valued by our readership;
a news sense that results in original stories;
an eye for detail and ability to meet set deadlines;
curiosity and willingness to challenge existing approaches to safe chemicals management;
flexibility and versatility to cover a wide range of different issues and topics; and
good communications skills, internally and externally, including the ability to chair conferences and webinars.
The role includes travel to conferences and meetings mainly in North America, and to the UK, where Chemical Watch is headquartered.
Salary depends on experience.
