Do you regularly see a completely fresh news angle in a story and are you very quickly ready with the killer headline to go with it? Do you find yourself rewriting nearly every headline you read?
We’re looking for a new production/sub editor to work in our London newsroom.
The Register is the world’s first technology redtop – we’ve been around since the web was young and we’re read by IT professionals the world over. We have a pool of very talented writers and beyond all the grammar stuff, you’ll be showcasing this writing to “the internet at large”. It’s not just about headlines and subbing; it’s about search and social media too. It’s an interesting job, and you’ll likely be learning a lot of new skills while you’re here.
Some of this will be, er, “social work” , which very rarely means drinks with our passionate commenters, but mostly means Twitter, LinkedIn, the legendary Register forums and yes, Facebook too.
Essential: You’ll need a news nose and the ability to proof-read (and in some cases rewrite) large volumes of technical copy both quickly and very accurately – with the confidence and the good sense to ask questions when necessary. You’ll also need to be able to work with digital imagery.
We’d prefer someone with a background or knowledge of UK media law, but we can provide training for the right candidate.
Also useful, though not essential: technical knowledge (programming skills, IT expertise).
The role is based in our Clerkenwell offices in London.
