Solar is rapidly emerging as a disruptive alternative energy source, with the potential to change the way we produce and consume electricity. Solar Media is a fast-growing, London-based international publishing and events company specialising in all aspects of solar energy. We have an extensive portfolio of print and online publications providing breaking news and in-depth analysis to the UK and global solar industries, plus a growing number of conferences and exhibitions at home and abroad.
We are looking to hire an experienced journalist to write news, features and blogs across our portfolio of UK titles. You will support the ongoing development of our online and print coverage of this fast-moving and fascinating market at what is a critical time for the industry as it seeks new and creative ways to underpin its next phase of growth.
Your main responsibilities will be to provide breaking and exclusive news, and analytical content for our flagship UK website, Solar Power Portal, and our newest site, Next Energy News, which is taking our coverage into new low-carbon energy sectors. You’ll also play a key role in writing in-depth features for our bi-monthly magazine, Solar Business Focus UK.
These responsibilities will require a strong suite of core journalistic skills in news and feature writing, as well as a desire to set the agenda through the generation of exclusive content. The ideal candidate would be a tenacious and self-starting journalist with two to three years’ experience in news, features and blog writing. Familiarity with writing on technical and/or policy-related topics would be desirable, but more important are accuracy and clarity, a willingness to get to grips with a complex topic and, above all, a desire to be first to the big story.
Main responsibilities:
Source, research and write news stories, features and blog articles for our Solar Power Portal and Next Energy News, taking ownership of specific patches of our coverage
Research and write feature content for Solar Business Focus UK, working with in-house designers and production
Develop industry contacts and expanding our pool of outside contributors
Use social media to engage with readers
Core skills and attributes:
Strong news gathering and writing, with emphasis on generating exclusives
Excellent features writing
Keen interest in using social media to maximise impact of coverage
Excellent interpersonal skills, internally and externally
Experience with or willingness to embrace multi-media technologies, particularly video
