Planning is looking for an associate editor to write print and online news, and edit bulletins and special reports.
An existing understanding of the sector would be helpful, but is not as important to the role as curiosity and a willingness to become immersed in the subject matter.
Planning is the fortnightly title for town planners and professionals concerned with planning and managing the natural and built environment.
In 2014, the title’s editorial team was highly commended in the business to business category of the Association of Online Publishers’ digital publishing awards.
The vacancy is for someone who will:
Write online news and print news analysis and features. This will take up between half and two-thirds of their time
Compile weekly bulletin(s) of news on specialist planning topics
Edit supplements and liaise with the awards team on awards projects.
This person will need:
Reporting
Able to develop the ability to quickly pinpoint the key point of interest for professional planners in reports, decisions etc, and to explain it clearly and accessibly in their own words
Able to build and maintain high level contacts in the sector
Able to quickly build an understanding of the issues that matter most to planners
Exemplary writing skills: able to write news and features accurately, objectively, authoritatively, concisely and clearly
Ability to analyse data (or to quickly develop the skills to do this) to generate exclusive news, and work with the infographics designer to present it clearly, accessibly and accurately
Ability to generate exclusive news stories by use of a forward diary to track ongoing stories, contact building etc
Ability to build a reputation for authoritative analysis by putting stories in context, accessing authoritative comment etc
Online and social media
Ability to upload stories and accompanying pictures to CMS (or to quickly learn how to do this)
Ability to build a weekly bulletin from the CMS (or to quickly learn how to do this)
Ability to build and maintain social media networks using Twitter, Linked In, Google Plus etc (or to quickly learn how to do this)
Special report editing
Ability to organise data collection on varying scales (e.g. drawing up survey forms, overseeing forms’ distribution and overseeing chasing up of responses)
Ability to supervise publishing assistants/temps in data collection
Ability to analyse resulting data, and work with infographics designer/designer to present it attractively and accessibly, and to achieve maximum impact
Ability to commission journalists to write features for the supplements
Ability to write articles commenting authoritatively on survey findings
Ability to liaise with the senior online editor to maximise quality of presentation on web as well as in print
Ability to liaise with art editor to forward plan presentation of supplement content
Ability to draw up and manage a schedule for editorial production of a supplement
Conference programme production
Ability to contribute content ideas for conference programmes, both in terms of topics and speakers
Awards
Act as a key editorial team liaison person, working with the awards team on categories, judging, promotion of entry form online and in print, reporting of the shortlist and production of online and print coverage of the winners.
