Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Advisor – ActionAid – London

Two year fixed-term contract

ActionAid is looking to increase our voice on humanitarian policy matters. We want to help make the system much more responsive to the needs and rights of disaster affected people. We need someone to help us raise that voice, looking at the issues, talking to decision makers and helping us speak out on the issues that matter to us and to the people we work with.

Having gained experience working on humanitarian policy and advocacy matters you are now ready for a fresh challenge in an organisation that is delivering a bold strategy to provide sustained improvements to the poorest and most excluded people in the world. This position as Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Advisor with ActionAid is the role that you are looking for.

Join us and you will provide specialist support on humanitarian policy and advocacy matters, enhance the visibility and reputation of our work in the humanitarian sector, as well as engage with leading institutions and stakeholders to build our influence. This will involve undertaking research, providing analysis and developing our thinking around humanitarian policy issues. You will also play an active role in representing ActionAid in relevant networks and to decision makers in government and beyond, promoting our work and objectives and building mutually beneficial relationships. The World Humanitarian Summit will be one of your key focus areas. You will also be involved in coordinating international policy activities, working closely alongside colleagues in disaster affected countries.

Having worked in an NGO or a similar environment, you must have an excellent understanding of humanitarian issues. This will be backed by an awareness of the political and economic forces which influence relations between the global North and South. You will have developed an in-depth appreciation of the international humanitarian system and relevant policy debates on issues such as humanitarian response, disaster risk reduction and resilience. Experienced at policy analysis, you will have lobbied civil servants and government and been involved in coalition building and network development. In addition, you must have a high standard of English, good presentation skills and the ability to work in a team. You must also be flexible to travel as required, including at short notice and in potentially difficult circumstances.

Interviews will be held on the 23rd March 2015.
